Funeral services for Lou Terry of Hay Springs, Nebraska will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 10:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Hay Springs with Pastor Paul Smith officiating.  Burial will be at the Hay Springs City Cemetery.  Visitations will be open to the public on Friday, June 21, 2019 at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron.

Doris Louisa Terry, daughter of Richard and Nancy (Gifford) Driefholt, was born October 14, 1924 at Cambridge, Nebraska and passed away at Chadron Community Hospital in Chadron, Nebraska on Saturday June 16, 2019.

Mrs. Terry’s family settled early in Nebraska. Her paternal grandparents immigrated to America in 1882 from the Ostfriesland area of Germany and in 1892 move to Nebraska. Her maternal grandparents trace their roots in America to the early 1600’s in Massachusetts and homesteaded in Nebraska in 1878. Her childhood was spent on her parent’s farm near Paxton, Nebraska, and she attended high school in Paxton. In 1938, when she was thirteen, her mother died and she had to leave high school to help with family matters, returning to high school the next year.

On August 1, 1941 Lou was married to Donald Robert Terry and they moved to California. One child, Jerry, was born to this union in July of the following year.

In 1943, Don joined the Navy. Lou moved back to Paxton, Nebraska with her young son, where she lived with her father and his family. Following the war Don and Lou moved back to California where they lived in Oakland for three years. In 1948 the family returned to Nebraska and farming near Wauneta.

In 1949, Don and Lou drew a unit on the Mirage Flats Irrigation Project south of Hay Springs, Nebraska and in 1950 moved onto Unit 31. The first year the family lived in a Government surplus folding trailer; during that year in addition to farming, Don built a basement house for the family. They continued to improve the farm and in 1960 were able to purchase Unit 30, just south of their own. Don and Lou remodeled the existing house on that unit and moved into it in 1962 where they lived together until Don’s death of cancer in 1984. Following Don’s death Lou continued to live on the farm until 2010 when she moved Prairie Pines in Chadron, Nebraska. In 2012 Doris moved back to Hay Springs and lived at Pioneer Manor.

Mrs. Terry was active in community affairs in the Hay Springs and Mirage Flats area. She was an active member of The United Methodist Church, U. M. W., V. F. W. Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Blue Bonnet Garden Club. Lou has been a member of The United Methodist Church since 1939. She was known as the “Flower Lady” for all the flowers around her house and in her large garden; she was also known as the “Carmel Corn Lady” for her Carmel Corn which was much in demand at the annual Rummage Sale and at Christmas.

Mrs. Terry is survived by her son, Jerry and daughter-in-law, Ilene of Centennial, Colorado; her sister, Darlene Berges of Denver, and many nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her husband; her grandson, Erik; her parents; one brother James; two sisters: Ellen Jaenicke and Shirley Krauter.

His memorial service and celebration of life will be Friday, July 12th at 10:30 am at the Presbyterian Church in Bridgeport, NE. Bridgman Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Scottsbluff is assisting the family with arrangements.

John Howard Stevens was born December 2, 1939, in Broken Bow, Nebraska at his Grandfather Carothers hospital to Dr. “Steve” Howard Brooks Stevens and Maurine Carothers Stevens. As a young child, John often accompanied his mother to the Broken Bow Ladies Garden Club and served as the mascot for their activities. John attended the Broken Bow Presbyterian Church as a child. By age 15, he worked part-time in an auto parts store, which he would fondly remember as one of his favorite jobs. It was during this time that he also worked in the Sandhills and developed a life-long love of the area. While in high school, he participated in many activities including track, football and was named All-State Basketball in his senior year. He graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1957.

John attended Hastings College from 1957-1959 and readily stated he did not spend much time in the books during those years. In the summer of those first years of college, he worked for the National Park Service at Wild Basin near Estes Park, Colorado. John moved to California in 1959 and married Nancy Skelly. To this marriage, his son Scott Stevens was born in 1961. John returned to Omaha, Nebraska where he worked at a paper company and drove a forklift.

In 1962, John met and married Jolene Roth of Hartington, NE. To this marriage, two children were born. Tracy Jay (TJ) Stevens was born in 1963 and Stephanie Stevens was born in 1970.

After four and a half years of doing 22 different jobs, John returned to college at Kearney State College and began undergraduate school. He was on the Dean’s List four semesters and was admitted to the University of Nebraska Medical School in 1966. John graduated with the Medical School Class of 1970 and began a 1-year general medical internship followed by a neurology residency through 1972. During this residency, he also began to work as an Emergency Room physician at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. From that point on, he continued to work and specialize in Emergency Medicine.

His work in Emergency Medicine took him from Texas to Colorado where he and a partner were the first Emergency Room providers at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, CO. He also worked in ER’s from Montana to Nebraska and spent many years in Sterling, CO as the Medical Director and provider for Spectrum Emergency Medicine Group. He taught numerous courses including ACLS, ATLS and was medical director for several ground and air ambulance services. For many years, work was his life. He worked long, hard 24- hour shifts and was an excellent physician with acute assessment and diagnostic skills. He took time to talk with his patients and their families and had high expectations of those he worked with to provide patient care.

In 1981, John married Diana Post Hruza. Soon after, they began life together on an acreage near Chimney Rock outside of Bayard, NE. John became a stepfather to Jennifer & Heidi Hruza and was involved in the community activities that go along with raising children. After the kids had all grown, John and Diana moved briefly to Colorado Springs, CO followed by Oshkosh, NE and finally returned to the farm outside Bayard. He retired from Emergency Medicine in 2002 but continued to work in various clinics throughout the panhandle of NE until 2012. He loved to talk medicine and had an acute mind that was constantly working and learning especially enjoying physics, cars and flying.

Over the years, he greatly enjoyed travels to South America, Greece, the Panama Canal, Scandinavia, Alaska, Cabo San Lucas Mexico and visiting friends and family throughout the United States. His precious times over the last few years included his journey with the Lord, Bible studies, and involvement in the Presbyterian Church of Bridgeport. He built a yellow Deuce Victoria hot rod, adored all his grandchildren, gardened, read, watched hot rod shows and puttered around his beloved farm. A highlight each year was the annual Broken Bow family reunion. He was able to attend this year with his children Scott, TJ and Stephanie, which he viewed as a final highlight of his life.

John’s life story is one of redemption, the grace of God and the love of friends and family. John never met a stranger and always made those around him know that they were important to him but also to God. He would be the first to say, his life was far from perfect. He lived life fully, he loved completely and he joyfully looked forward to spending eternity in Heaven. In his last days, he was surrounded by friends and family. He was able to see Jesus with his arms wide open and he passed from this life being held and loved by his wife Diana, son TJ and step daughters Jennifer and Heidi. His wish is that others would come to know the Lord and realize, it is never too late. “My life is full of God’s blessings. God bless you and may we all live for and serve the glory of God.”

John is survived by his wife Diana; son Scott Stevens and his wife Harriet and grandson Alex of Salinas, CA; son Tracy Jay (TJ) Stevens and his wife Abbey of Fort Collins, CO; grandson Miles Andrews and his wife Tiffany and great- granddaughter Harper of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter Stephanie Stevens of San Diego, CA; stepdaughter Zoe, also of San Diego, CA; stepdaughter Jennifer Hays and her husband Tim and their children Spencer, Abbey and Mackinze of Eaton, CO; stepdaughter Heidi Ritchie and her husband Drew and their children Ethan and Zach of Enid, OK; and his brother Denny of Broken Bow, NE, brother Tom of Tucson, AZ and sister Martha of Granite Falls, WA. He is also survived by numerous cousins and very dear nephews and nieces as well as friends.

They achieved international acclaim and clientele. For many years they sponsored the D & A fast pitch softball team that won several state tournaments.

After 92 years of being faithful to God, family and country, Forest Carnine has gone to his heavenly home. He was born in Bridgeport, Nebraska on September 22, 1926 to Leo Daniel and MaeBelle (Lawrence) Carnine. His sister Maxine was 3 years old and welcomed him to the family ranch north of Angora where he lived the rest of his life, except for his time in the Navy. He attended grade school in Angora, graduated from Alliance High in 1943 and attended Chadron State for 1 year.

He entered active service in the Navy on October 17, 1944 and was released July 6, 1946. He had been accepted into flight school before WWII ended.  He learned to fly at the old airport on the southwest side of Alliance. He flew on the ranch checking cattle and visiting friends and family across the state. He was a good steward of the ranch and cattle God had given him to care for. Forest was one of the first in the area to have irrigation for the alfalfa. He was Mr. Fix-it as many ranchers have to become. “Grandpa Fix” were some of his grandson Leo’s first words.

After meeting while taking the Dale Carnegie Course in Alliance, Forest and Dorothy Diehl (daughter of Walter and Maybell (Miller) Diehl ) were married in Willcox, AZ on November 25, 1965. He changed from horses to motorcycles to check the pasture and in his early 80’s bought his last cycle. The corrals he created will be here for his great-great grandchildren. Family were on his gift list for making beautiful silver jewelry. (Ecc 3:22 “So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot.”)  Forest found great satisfaction in caring for the land and animals entrusted to him. Quote from Forest 9/24/01: “We are blessed if we feel God knows best.” He was a very patient, kind and honest man.

Forest was on the Angora School Board for many years. He and Henry Hass kept the Farm Bureau in Morrill County alive until some younger blood could take over. Forest was a long time member of the Alliance Rifle Club. He sang with a local barbershop quartet and played the guitar and base with local bands. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Alliance. Forest and both sons were baptized the same day with Holy water brought from the Holy Land by Reverend Buehler.
