Joel Schafer, 72

September 14, 1946 – January 19, 2019

Joel Schafer was a no-nonsense man of action who knew how to enter a room.
His long, confident stride, twinkling blue eyes, mane of silver hair, and engaging
smile simply said, “I have arrived.”  In fact, he would arrive in many places
throughout his life, including Africa, New Zealand, the Yukon, and the Northwest
Territories.  Adventurous, dynamic, and bold, he was always on the move.

One of four rambunctious brothers, he graduated from Alliance High School in
1964, then attended the Denver National Electronics Institute.  He went on to serve
for 10 years as a Navy Illustrator Draftsman, and cross-trained as a photographer.
Back home, he worked for the family business, Schafer Auto Supply, and built bridges
on the BN Railroad.

Joel loved to travel, and building bridges for BN soon became a 30-year career riding
the rails as a locomotive engineer for BNSF.  Hunting, travel, and photography were
favorite past-times.  An intelligent man, he loved to read and learn new things.  He
did not shy away from a challenge, and when he became interested in making gunstocks,
well – he just taught himself how to do it.  He was soon building custom gunstocks for
friends and family on his days off from his full-time work at BNSF.

He met his beautiful fellow adventurer, Barbara Green, while at work.  They drove
trains together for three years before Joel, always straightforward and direct, asked her
if she would like to go squirrel hunting.  She said yes.  They married in 1982, and have
been hunting and traveling together ever since.  Some of their favorite adventures
together were hunting trips to Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, New Zealand, and
Alaska.  They also toured Europe, and have journeyed everywhere around the United
States.  Joel always said, “Barb is happiest when the wheels are turning.”  They kept
them turning as much as possible, always together.

Upon retirement from BNSF in 2007, Joel became a full-time stockmaker.  By this
point, he had become a skilled craftsman, and his work was in high demand.  In 2013,
he wrote The Final Touch – A Complete Course in Gunstock Checkering, illustrated in
detail with his own photography.  His book has sold in the U.S. and in 17 foreign countries.
Considered one of the leading experts on gunstock checkering, Joel wrote stockmaking
labs for the Sonoran Desert Institute Gunsmith School, was a professional member of the
American Custom Gunmakers Guild, and a past member of Firearms Engravers Guild of
America.  In December 2018, Joel made the cover of Gunmaker Magazine, a very high
honor, of which he was very proud.  He also wrote Photography Basics for Gunsmiths,
Engravers, and Collectors, a complete guide on the art of gun photography.  Both of Joel’s
books – and the 5-star reviews –  can be found on Amazon.com.

Joel was blessed with a very large family, which include his two sons, 5 stepchildren, 21
grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.  In fact, the 2018 Family Christmas Party was
attended by 47 – all family.  Only 4 couldn’t make it.  In addition to family, Joel was blessed
to have many close friends, near and far.

Whether on hunting excursions in exotic locations, or quietly checkering a gun, or writing a
new book, or visiting with close friends out in his shop, or enjoying a glass of wine, or driving
his wife to Dairy Queen in his 1951 red Chevy pick-up on a summer evening, Joel kept the
wheels turning in his life in many ways.  He lived each moment fully, and on his own terms.
He also faced death boldly, and on his own terms. Although we can only wonder about his
new adventures, we are certain that Joel arrived, blue eyes twinkling, ready and curious,
with all of the confidence that he possessed in life.

Joel is survived by his loving wife Barbara of Alliance, NE; seven children (and their spouses):
Eric Schafer (Anne) of Fort Collins, CO; Thad Schafer of Medford, WI; Mary Theresa Green
(Tony Amill) of Alliance, NE; Stephani (Ed Pelton) of Chadron, NE; Amy (Ed Jensen) of
Alliance, NE; Eric Green of Tekamah, NE; Natalie (Shawn Miller) of Lakeside, NE; 21 grand=
children, and 10 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by brothers Rick Schafer of
Alliance, NE; Scott Schafer of Crawford, NE; Clint Schafer of North Platte, NE; many nieces,
nephews, and extended family, and countless friends.

A rosary will be held at 7:00 pm on Sunday, January 27, 2019, and funeral services will be at
10:00 am on Monday, January 28, 2019, both at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance, NE,
followed by a Celebration of Life party at the Eagles Club in Alliance.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family kindly requests donations to be given in Joel’s name to
the Nebraska Humane Society online at www.nehumanesociety.org or to St. Jude Children’s
Research Hospital online at www.stjude.org

Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Fairview Cemetery in Rushville, Nebraska with
Pastor Paul Smith officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday,
February 16, 2019 at 9:30 AM at Chamberlain Drabbels Mortuary in Hay Springs, prior to the

George Brownlow, known to family and friends as “Porge” passed away on February 10, 2019 in
Chadron, Nebraska at the age of 83 years old. George Raymond Brownlow was born on March
7, 1935 to Ray and Ruth Brownlow in Rushville, Nebraska. He attended Cravin Creek School and
graduated from the eighth grade.
George had numerous jobs, one leading to Galveston, Texas for a painting contract. Vernon
Sager, his special life long friend said, “You are not going to like being far away from home.”
Needless to say he was right, because later came back to work for Vernon his life long friend
and began a lifelong ranching career.

Later George went to work for the Star Ranch, south of Gordon, Nebraska and from there he
went to work for the Shrewsbury ranch where he was employed for forty years, retiring in
2009.

After retiring, George moved to Hay Springs to his mom and dad’s house where he enjoyed
hunting, fishing, and was known to have a few beverages with family and friends, or whomever
decided to stop by and talk of old times. If he was teasing or pulling a joke or prank on
someone, he was happy.

George was married to Ardyth Rose, and to this union three children were born. Sons, Jimmy
Ray and Robert Neal Brownlow, and daughter Joanne Marcene Lintt. He then married Clarenda
Lee Broken Leg and to this union two sons were born, Neal Allen and Gayle Lee Brownlow.
George was then married to Sharon Campbell and added three children to the family, Tracy
Lynn Devena, stepdaughter, Lavonne Jean Connelly and Lisa Marie Long, daughters.
George never knew a stranger, and anyone was welcome in his home for a cold one. He
showed his love by teasing and joking, and he was a simple man to his family and friends and
truly loved people and good times. His wish was, “May everyone enjoy life and good times as I

Lyle John Fodnes, 82

Lyle John Fodnes was born April 30, 1936 to Walter and Ida (Iversen) Fodnes in a sod house at the Iversen farm in Berea, NE. He graduated from Alliance High School in 1953 and from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, NE in 1957. Following his service in the United States Army (1958-1959), Lyle worked at Hemingford High School as an English, drama, yearbook, and computer teacher. Later, after earning double Master’s degrees at Chadron State College, Lyle became the Hemingford High School principal and served in that role until his retirement in 1996. Following retirement, Lyle began his second full-time career at the Hemingford Ledger. He served there as sports editor, advertising director and photographer from 1996 until 2018.

A long-time fixture of the Hemingford community, Lyle will be remembered especially for his concern for the youth of Box Butte County. This was evident from his decades of service to Hemingford Schools, and his dedication to mentoring young people and supporting HHS Sports, 4-H, and other youth organizations. In 2018 he was named the volunteer of the year at the Box Butte County Fair. For as long as anyone can remember, Lyle had been a part of the Fair, serving most memorably as the emcee for the Fair Queen Contest and as the grandstand-announcer for the Fair Parade. Lyle was also a long-time supporter of the Post Playhouse at Fort Robinson State Park. In 1976 he starred as John Adams in the Post’s production of “American Primitive.” More recently, he served as a board member for the Playhouse. Lyle also loved the movies. As one of the “Bachelors Five,” Lyle helped reopen the Roxy Theatre in Hemingford for several years in the 1960s in order to give the Hemingford youth a place to hang out. And in more recent years, it was not unusual to find Lyle greeting moviegoers and tearing tickets at the Alliance Theatre. While he made an impact in all of his roles, people all over the panhandle will remember Lyle as the man with the camera around his neck. His love for photography began in High School and never stopped. His photos have helped document generations of history in Box Butte County.

The foundation for Lyle’s life of community service was his faith. He was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Alliance. He faithfully attended and served the church as a Sunday School teacher, confirmation instructor, and Parish Ministry Assistant. Lyle took to heart Jesus’ command to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” And to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37,39) In the strength of God’s love and forgiveness, Lyle devoted his life to God and to others. His love and service to friends and family in the Hemingford community and beyond truly reflected that.

Lyle was received into the loving arms of his Savior on February 11, 2019 at the age of 82.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Ida. Surviving him are his sister, Jean Daugherty, and her husband Stanley; his niece, Krista Young, and her husband, Wade, and their children, Kalen Baertlein (Isaac), Ashley Young, Jordyn Kleinberg, and Kevin Young; his nephew, Kevin Daugherty, and wife, Elizabeth, and their children, Micah and Olivia; and his nephew, Shaun Daugherty, and wife, Beth, and their children, Jonas, Silas, Zachary and Amos.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 18 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s United Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Alliance. Pastor Tim Stadem will officiate.  Burial will be at 130 p.m. at the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery south of Hemingford. All are welcomed to attend. Visitation will be Sunday from 1-6 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Hemingford.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. John’s United Lutheran Church, the Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association, the Hemingford Scholarship Foundation, or the Post Playhouse.
