Doreen Semroska, 86

“Doreen’s work here on earth is done. She received a call from her Lord and Savior
on Monday, December 31, 2018.” Doreen was born to the late Albert E. and Dora L.
Bunge on February 11, 1932 at the ranch east of Harrison.

As a long-time resident of Sioux County, Doreen lived her whole life there in the
beauty of the Pine Ridge area. She attended school in Sioux County and after
graduating, taught country school at Bodarc for a few years until she married Charles
Lou Smith on September 29, 1950. To this union two boys were born: Alan Dean and
Jay Dee.  They lived and worked on the Virgil Kennedy ranch northwest of Harrison
until the place was sold in 1972. Chuck passed away in 1986. Doreen married Raymond
Semroska on September 17, 1988, where they made their home north of Harrison for
the next 25 years until they moved to Harrison.

Doreen’s passion and delight include the area in which she lived. She grew up spending
her time with her brother (Dean) riding horses through the canyons on the home place.
Doreen had a love for knowledge and reading (even the fine print) and doing crossword
puzzles. You could always see a quick daily journal of what was happening on the ranch.
Many times an argument was settled by her journal (When did we turn out the bulls was
often won by her journal notes). She loved to host Christmas Eve at her home with her
family and hated when she no longer had the strength to entertain everyone. No one ever
left hungry at any family gatherings if Doreen did the cooking. She enjoyed gardening,
canning, and loved to look and smell the flowers. Many summers were spent on her hands
and knees pulling weeds by hand. She often said she would just as soon be pulling weeds
than cleaning house.

She was an active member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid in Harrison.
She loved teaching Sunday School classes and working with children. Her love for Sioux
County and ranching showed when she wanted Harrison to adopt “The Beef Friendly
County” slogan for Nebraska. She did the legwork and paperwork needed for this. Even
though this did not work out for her, the passion she had for both were ingrained within her.

She leaves her husband Raymond of 30 years; step~daughters Charmaine (Craig) Uhrig and
Dana Semroska; step~sons; Todd (Sharon) Semroska; Curt Semroska, Dal Semroska, and
Calvin Semroska.; Sons: Alan (Letticia) Smith & Jay Dee (Kathy) Smith; 5 Grandchildren;
12 Step-Grandchildren; 6 Great Grandchildren and 25 Step Great-Grandchildren.

Doreen was preceded in death by parents; her first husband Chuck; Brother Dean Bunge;
Sister-in-law Hazel Bunge; Step-Son Clay; Step Granddaughter Steffe Evans and Great
Granddaughter AnDee Smith.

Funeral Services for Doreen will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Redeemer
Lutheran Church in Harrison. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the

Phyllis Elsie Gillett was born on March 19, 1929 and went to be with her Lord
and Savior on January 15, 2019.

When she was born on March 19 th , she was dubbed “the little mud-bound
baby.” The night before her parents discussed going to town but decided it was
too muddy. But the young lady was determined to arrive so her father called
the doctor who talked him through the delivery, step by step. It was two weeks
before her parents were able to take her to town to see the doctor.

At five years old, Phyllis began to go to school at District #61. She received all her
elementary education in Sioux County in Districts 61, 29, and 51. She loved school.
Reading was one of her favorite pastimes and doing crossword puzzles.

As a young girl, one year they had the measles. At that time her father purchased,
with the older children’s sheep and wool money, a second-hand phonograph and
a box of records for 25cents. A week or so before her death, Phyllis was asking the
family if they knew where the phonograph was. The phonograph helped develop
her love for music. She especially liked to sing.

Phyllis attended high school at her father’s alma mater, Chadron prep, a part of
Chadron State college. She graduated in 1948. She received her Bachelor of
Science degree in music education for Chadron State College in 1969. During her
life she taught school for several years in the public schools and the Chadron
Christian School.

Phyllis married Orlando S. Osborn. They lived many years in the Nebraska
Sandhills where he worked as a ranch hand and she was sometimes a ranch cook.
They had two sons, Kenneth B. and Charles E. In 1958, they moved back to Sioux
County where she taught the Grote School and Landy worked as a ranch hand for
Bruce Parsons. After Landy passed away in August of 2008, she missed him
everyday.

In 1965, they moved to Harrison and in the Spring of 1966, they moved to Chadron
where they purchased their home in 1967. For many years she sold Tupperware
and enjoyed meeting many women at the parties.  Phyllis’ greatest love was her
family.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Rowland and Harriet Gillett, her
husband Orlando Osborn, her brothers, Eston, Quentin, and LaVern, her sister Willa,
sister-in-law Lorraine, and six nieces and nephews.
Leaving to mourn her passing are her sons, Ken of Georgetown, TX, and Charles
(Myra) of Round Rock, TX; grandchildren: Christie (Don) Snyder of Fort Worth, TX
their children, Colton, Mason and Autumn; Deann (Bramwell) Shemuyarira of
Conroe, TX, their son, Israel, and Tonya (David) Beaubet of Plano, TX, their children,

Gayle I. Howell (Overton), 84, of Gering, passed away Monday, January 14, 2019
at Heritage Estates in Gering.  She set a fine example of fighting cancer with
dignity.  A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 26, 2019
at Central Church of Christ in Gering with Pastor Herb Rainey officiating.
Casual attire is welcome.  Interment will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in
Gering.  Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Friday, January 25, 2019 at
Bridgman Funeral Home in Scottsbluff.  Memorials may be made in care of
the family.

Online condolences may be made by visiting www.bridgmanfuneralhome.com.

Gayle was born August 29, 1934 in Clay Center, Nebraska to Clarence and
Dorothy (Leiter) Overton.  The family moved to Alliance when Gayle was
four months old.  She graduated from Alliance High School with the class of 1952.

Gayle married Darnello H. Howell on May 29, 1953 in Hot Springs, South Dakota.
Seven children were born to this union.  She loved Darnello to the day she passed.
She was always saying he was handsome and the best thing in her life.  She was full
of forgiveness and Darnello said she was the wind beneath his wings.  They loved
each other to the end.  They could often be found drinking coffee together with
friends.  Their Friday night dates were spent people-watching at the old Wal-Mart
in Scottsbluff.  They would grab a hamburger and a drink and hang out in the
parking lot watching people come and go.

Gayle worked for Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services as a
secretary for 33 years retiring in 1999.  She made many friends and acquaintances
through the years.

Gayle was a giving and caring person.  Her smile said it all.  She loved going to
garage sales and auctions.  She enjoyed spending time at her daughter, Janet’s
house.  Janet especially appreciated all the time her parents spent together taking
care of her place, mowing and feeding the birds, geese and fish.  Gayle said going
to Janet’s was her “relaxation”.  She liked the outdoors and also spent time visiting
the Riverside Zoo and the Wildcat Hills.

Gayle was an amazing mother and always busy with her family.  She took a lot of
time attending parent teacher conferences for seven children, going to band concerts
and rooting for the Gering Bulldog football team.  She loved the Nebraska
Cornhuskers and proudly wore her red Nebraska shirt.

We as her children are proud of our Mom.  She was a good example of faith and
she always read her Bible and prayed when hard decisions needed to be made.
She was also an example of endurance through good and bad times.  We’ll miss
her wisdom and guidance, but most of all we will miss her big, beautiful smile.
Her previous boss, T.J. always told her, “keep smiling or you will get wrinkles.”
So everyone keep smiling!

Survivors include her children, Janet Howell, Jeane Warfield, Julie (Gary)
Ballinger, James (Mary) Howell, Jeff (Caroline) Howell and Jodell (Andy)
Augustyn; grandchildren, Bryan (Billie), Derrick (Monica), Troy (Kyna), Tracy
(Aaron), Madison, Zachary, Alison, Tamara (Paul), Trevor, AJ (Candy) and

Overton.
