Funeral services for Hannah Hollibaugh of Austin, Texas will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at 10:00 AM at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hay Springs, Nebraska with Pastor Allan Wierschke officiating. Burial will be at the Hay Springs Cemetery.
Hannah Rachel Hollibaugh of Austin, TX (formerly of Lincoln, NE), was born on December, 24 1987 in Farmington, New Mexico. Her doctors had assured her parents that her due date was not—as originally set—on Christmas Day of that year, but rather a whole month later. Hannah’s parents were given the go-ahead to travel and so were visiting family in New Mexico when Hannah was born near her original due date, full-term. Only hours after her ‘surprise’ delivery, Hannah was sent home, tucked into a colorful Christmas stocking. She was the best Christmas present her family ever received. On 10 January, 1988 Hannah was born again by water and the Word in Holy Baptism.

Hannah died on July 28th, 2016. She was 28.

Mourning her death are her parents, Rev. Karl and Dr. Becky Hollibaugh; daughter Kamiela; siblings Nathaniel, Leah, and Josiah; fiancee Hunter Cahalan; grandparents Kenneth Hollibaugh and Dick and Vici Merrill; great grandmother Alta Merrill; also Korey Burden and many aunts, uncles and family. She is also remembered fondly by her many friends, coworkers and customers on Austin’s 6th Street and at the Big Bang Bar, where she was general manager and bartender. Hannah was preceded in death by her dearly loved grandmother, RoseMary Hollibaugh, and her cousin, Travis Pieper.

She will be remembered for her loving feistiness, her excellent work ethic, her joie de vivre, and for her artistic talents.

A memorial fund has been established for her daughter Kamiela. Memorials may be sent to Security First Bank, 231 North Main St, Hay Springs, NE 69347

Knight

Robert E. Knight died in Loveland, Colorado on Saturday, August 13, 2016. He was born in Alliance, Nebraska, on November 27, 1941, to Edward M. and Ruth McDuffee Knight. He graduated from Alliance High School in 1959 and proceeded to Yale University, where he received his B.A. in Economics with high honors in 1963. He followed this with the M.A. in 1965 and Ph.D. in 1968 from Harvard University. While at Harvard, he worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, the foundation of his lifelong interest in economics as distinct from banking. His career included 13 years as a monetary economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, where he rose to become Secretary to the Board. He moved from Kansas City to become the fourth generation to head the Alliance National Bank and Trust Company.

Throughout his career Knight was an avid professor of economics. He taught at the US Naval Academy, the University of Missouri at Kansas City, Park College, and the Stonier and Colorado Graduate Schools of Banking. After a semester of teaching legal aspects of banking at East Tennessee State University, he was delighted to receive a Dartmouth College of Law diploma. Dartmouth does not have a college of law, but his legal expertise was widely recognized. He headed the Bondholders Protective Committee in the 20 billion dollar bankruptcy of Executive Life Insurance Company in California. He authored numerous economic articles and spoke throughout the country on banking issues.

Bob was a proud eccentric who flew kites and enjoyed donning his clan kilts, Gunn and McPhee, for Scottish activities. Saturday nights found him listening to the Midnight Special from WFMT Chicago. Its music inspired him to bring Up with People to Alliance. Ever devoted to dachshunds, care for his dogs led him to support cancer research at the Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine.  What is learned in animal cancer research is applicable to treating humans. His concern for the human-canine bond prompted him to buy a property in Sun City, Arizona, and establish Duffeeland Dog Park for the community.

Bob was one of five 1963 Yale graduates featured in “Halftime,” a 1988 film aired on PBS about men at midlife. His involvement with Yale included Spring Break “Issues in Rural America” externships for Yale students. For more than a decade he was a member of the Harvard Graduate School Council. In 2015 a Japanese Professor of Economics for whom he served as thesis advisor came from Japan to honor him with a Sensei ceremony.

Knight was the Chairman of the Eldred Foundation and spearheaded the building of the Sandhills Center at the Knight Museum, a project envisioned by Victor and Martha Eldred.  He was a 33 degree Mason, member of the Sons of the American Revolution, and a Presbyterian. During his Harvard years he attended Park Street Church, Boston, and subscribed to its weekly sermons ever after. He followed events in Alliance through the Times-Herald, which Eva read to him along with the Wall Street Journal. He succumbed to a one-in-a-million brain disease, cortico basal degeneration.

In 1966 he married his beloved wife, Eva Youngstrom Knight, who survives to cherish 50 years of memories. He was predeceased by his parents, brother, Frank M. Knight, and nephew, Brian A. Knight. He is survived by a niece, Celinda M. Knight. Survivors also include his dachshund, Heather, and her son, Tootle.

Memorials are suggested to the City of Alliance Fountain Fund or to the Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University.

Funeral services will be Friday, August 19, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church with Pastor Gideon Achi officiating.  Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.  Visitation will be Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. with family being present from 4-7 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home.

Patricia Lee Navratil
June 27, 1934-August 5, 2016

Funeral services were Monday, August 15, at St. Patrick’s Church in Chadron with burial at Calvary Cemetery. A vigil was held on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at the church.
Patricia Lee Navratil, 82, died August 5 in her beloved home of 45 years in Chadron, Nebraska.
Mother of five and grandmother of six, Pat devoted herself not only to her family but also to her friendships and community. For the past 25 years she belonged to P.E.O., the Philanthropic Education Organization for women. For two of the past five years, Pat expanded her circle of grandchildren by serving as a Foster Grandparent in Libby Uhing’s 2nd grade classroom at East Ward Elementary School. Pat recently retired as treasurer of the Friends of the Chadron Public Library.
Pat’s energy and determination defied her arthritis and overcame two broken hips. Carrying her cane, she traveled frequently, just three weeks ago to two family reunions in Minnesota.
It was there, in Minneapolis, that she was born and raised as the youngest of four Halverson girls. After graduation from Roosevelt High School, she became an airline stewardess, as flight attendants were known in the 1950s. She flew for Braniff International Airways in St. Louis, Mo., and Northwest Orient, then met and married chiropractor John Henry Navratil.
Their family grew to six in Litchfield, Minn., when the pioneer impulse struck her husband. They relocated to Chadron, where their last child was born. They then settled in their final home on 8th and King Streets.
Pat built and nurtured 50-year friendships at Ridgeview Country Club, in the family cabin at Lake Angostura, and around the card tables in her various bridge clubs. She helped lead her daughters’ Girl Scout troop and 4-H Club and taught religious education at Old St. Patrick’s Church.
“Five children – and I never heard her raise her voice,” Charla Marchant recalls her father Bob Hinman saying after performing handyman work at the Navratil house.
As her children grew older, Pat took classes at Chadron State College and worked part-time at Chadron Community Hospital, Nebraska Public Power, First National Bank North Platte, and Nebraska Health & Human Services.
She performed assorted good deeds through RSVP, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Birthright and the Flower Mission.
Pat appreciated Northwest Nebraska’s beauty and culture. She organized a Halverson family reunion at Fort Robinson in 2005, drawing relatives from around the country. The night before her death, Pat saw “Cabaret” at the Fort Robinson Post Playhouse with her eldest child, Ann, and Ann’s mother-in-law, Phyllis Burk.
“What a beautiful way to close a life well-lived,” said Marilyn Pedri of Fort Collins, Colo., a fellow former flight attendant and friend of Pat’s since 1957. “Just the week before, we had talked about her coming to Colorado and we would go see her friend Celia Stacy. She was full of plans to the very end.”
Pat is survived by her children Ann Burk (husband Randy) of Chadron; John Navratil of Broomfield, Colo.; David Navratil (wife Akxeeta) of Dallas; Paula Glenn (husband Mike) of Arvada, Colo.; and Wendy Donahue (husband P. Kevin) of Chicago, as well as grandchildren Alec and Zachary Burk, Emma Navratil, Peyton and Kellen Glenn, and Nora Donahue. She also is survived by her sisters Janet Holland and Arlene Halverson.
She is preceded in death by husband John, sister Marilyn Ramberg and parents Thomas and Lovina Halverson.
Memorial donations are being accepted at Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337, with contributions going to the P.E.O. Chapter BL Memorial Scholarship Fund and the John Navratil Family Endowment at Chadron State College.
