Funeral services for Hazel Bell of Crawford, Nebraska will be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 10:00 AM at the Harrison Bible Church with Pastor Matt Parker officiating.  Burial will be at the Harrison Cemetery.

Mrs. Bell passed away on May 4, 2016 at the Ponderosa Villa in Crawford, Nebraska.

Hazel was born June 7, 1921, to Bessie (Russell) and Rollie Joseph Reid at home on the Reid homestead North East of Minatare, NE.

She grew up there learning to love the various farm animals (cats, dogs, cattle, horses, sheep, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, etc.)

Her father got her a small Shetland pony colt when she was 5 or 6 years old.  In her later years felt her father was disappointed that she didn’t love the pony (Boots) more and spent more time riding him because he loved horses so much.  He liked to work with them training them to be ridden and working as a team.  She did ride Boots to get in the milk cows and at times to school.  Her sisters Zelma and Nellie spent more time with him and rode him more.

Hazel liked to work with her mom raising a big garden each summer and harvesting and using the produce.

Most summers brought the hatching baby chicks and sometimes turkeys and ducks and geese.

Hazel started going to school when six years old.  She went to “Hope” a two room country school a mile and a half west of her home.  For many years the lower grade room taught first through fourth grades and the other room taught fifth through eighth.  It was a two teacher school.

In 1934, Hazel’s parents decided to move.  They rented the Segebartt place from Aunt Clara (Segebartt) Russell who was living in Scottsbluff, NE.  This move caused Hazel, Zelma, and Nellie to change schools.  They began going to Nine Mile School another country school.  They lived there about a year.

Hazel attended this school until she graduated eighth grade.  The graduation ceremony was held in Gering, NE.
Hazel attended three different high schools.  She went two years at Nine Mile, one year at Minatare and her last year at Shelton Academy at Shelton, NE.  She then went to Scottsbluff Junior College for two years and got her teaching certificate.

Edgar Erickson, 91

Edgar Joseph Erickson, 91, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Box Butte General Hospital.
He was born November 10, 1924 at Nekoma, North Dakota to Jacob and Agnes (Novacek) Erickson.  Edgar enjoyed the pursuits of youth, but matured quickly when in 1943 he enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.  In later years he would tell of the devastation he witnessed during his service.  He longed for peace, so he could return back home to marry and start a family with his special girl, then Helen Dietz.
Ed returned back to Nekoma, ND in 1946 and married Helen on June 1, 1950 in Nekoma.  From that point, Ed and Helen moved around a lot with stops in North Dakota, Illinois and Nebraska.  Ed’s first job out of the military was as an electrician; he later found a home in Alliance, NE serving the booming railroad industry.
He enjoyed the good things in life: spending time with his growing family, calling bingo for his hometown Catholic Church; outdoor recreation, and visiting with his many friends.  He also believed in paying it forward by recycling and volunteering in his community.  The devastation of war never left his memory, and he did all he could to provide a better future for his community and family.  Ed lived out his retirement years in his Alliance home with his beloved Helen, and received daily visits from daughter, Carol and grandson Keldrin.
Ed was an amazing person, father, and friend and had a shining soul.  His energetic, positive attitude toward everything life handed to him was an inspiration to family and friends.  His spirit will live on in each and every one of the people he was in contact with.  Next time you see geese fly by, go fishing, and hunting or for a walk, think of Edgar.
Ed is survived by his wife, Helen Erickson, his daughter, Carol Krohe of Alliance, his 3 sons, Gary (Meredith) Erickson of Alliance, Mark Erickson of Keystone, SD and Keith (Jamie) Erickson of Moore, OK, his grandchildren, Kalin Krohe, Keldrin Krohe, Ava Erickson, Brilynn Erickson, Jason Erickson, Ryan Erickson, Crystal Erickson, Shae Erickson, Erik (Erin) Erickson, Murphy Erickson, Justin Erickson and 5 great grandchildren.   He is also survived by his sister, Frances Kartes of Duluth, MN and his brother, Olaf (Verna) Erickson of Towner, ND.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Pam Erickson, his brother, Jacob (Marie) Erickson, his sister, Margaret (Ray) Heck and his brother-in-law, Dick Kartes
