Charles Plummer Blaylock, age 94, a resident of Alliance, Nebraska, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Box Butte General Hospital. He was lovingly referred to by family and friends as: Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle and Charley.
Charles was born on February 24, 1921 in Sheridan County, Nebraska to the late Lewis Blaylock and Mary (Babb) Blaylock. Ashby, Nebraska was his home town. As a child he lived on the Remore Ranch north of Bingham, the Poppenhagen Ranch South of Ashby, then as a young adult moved to his mother’s ranch (formerly his Grandpa’s Babb’s homestead) South of Ashby. He graduated from Ashby High School in 1939.
He married the love of his life and soul mate Myrtle (King) Blaylock on May 16, 1943 in Ashby. From 1943 to 1950 they worked and lived on the Blaylock Ranch. In 1950 they moved into Ashby and in 1957 Charles took over the management of the CO-OP Store in Ashby. In 1963 he purchased the store and became the proud owner of Charley’s Market. He continued to run the Blaylock Ranch and operate Charley’s Market until his retirement years. Charles served on the Ashby School Board for most of his adult years as well as the election board for Grant County, and was an active member of the Ashby Congregational United Church of Christ. “Charley” was an avid Sandhiller and proud member of his community. He was a loving husband and father of eight children.
Charles is survived by his eight children; Mary Jo and husband Frank Voertmann of Farmington, MO, Jim Blaylock and wife Shirley of Brighton, CO, Bob Blaylock and wife Avis of Newport, NC, Becky and husband Mick McCawley of Colorado Springs, CO, Kenny Blaylock and wife Fay Ann of Falls City, NE, Goldie and husband Paul Muzquiz of Bridgeport, NE, Stanley Blaylock and wife Susan of Rapid City, SD and Keith Blaylock and wife Connie of Chadron, NE. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; three sisters, Gladys (Blaylock) Olson of Highlands Ranch, CO, Mary Lou (Blaylock) Dent of Springfield, MO and Josephine and husband Leonard Davis of Ashby, NE.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years Myrtle (King) Blaylock, his parents Lewis and Mary Blaylock, a half-sister, Lillian (Blaylock) Lawson, a son-in-law Darrell Mitchell, and two brothers, Lloyd Blaylock and Marvin Blaylock.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ashby Congregational Church with Pastor Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Burial will be in the Hyannis Cemetery. Reception following graveside will be at the Hyannis United Church of Christ. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the church.
