SISTER AGNESMARIE SLAIGHT, 82

Sister Agnesmarie Slaight, 82, died Monday, January 13, 2014 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

She was born on October 29, 1931 at Lynch, NE to the late Francis Emmett and Agnes (Hughes) Slaight and was named Gloria.

On September 8, 1949 she entered Marycrest Convent in Denver, CO to enter the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity. She professed her vows on August 15, 1952 and took the name Sister Agnesmarie.

She received her Bachelors of Science degree from Regis College in Denver in 1959.  She then received her Certificate of Theology from the College of St. Francis in Joliet, IL and her Master’s Degree in Education from Creighton University in 1973.

Sister Agnes Marie taught at schools at St. Francis Mission in SD, St. Elizabeth’s and Marycrest in Denver and Holy Rosary Mission in SD.  She served as a grade school principal at St. Mary’s in O’Neill and St. Agnes in Scottsbluff before coming to Alliance in 1978.  Here she taught 5th grade at St. Agnes Academy until 1987. She then returned to O’Neill as a teacher and principal until her retirement. Sister Agnesmarie then would serve as assistant administrator at Marion Residence and then move to Valentine and worked in pastoral ministry for St. Nicholas parish.

She is survived by her brother, Gordon Slaight of O’Neill, NE and her Franciscan Sisters.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 18 at 10:00 a.m. at Marian Chapel with Father Lou Nollette officiating.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.  Wake services will be Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Marian Chapel.
