Randy Eldon Sample, 67

Randy Eldon Sample, 67, passed away Friday, March 1, 2019 at his home in Minatare, NE with his family by his side.

He was born on September 18, 1951 at Alliance to Everett E. and Dorothy M. (Wood) Sample.
Randy attended Hemingford High School and  graduated in 1969.

On August 30, 1970 he was united in marriage to Mary E. Geary in Crawford, NE.

A lifelong resident of the panhandle Randy loved working with cattle and horses. He worked in cattle feed yards beginning with Prairie States Feedyard in Alliance where he was a foreman and then later as assistant manager when it became Dinklage Feedyard.  He then became manager of the Dinklage Feedyard in Minatare and then finished at Valley Feedyard until his retirement. His favorite horse was named Slim and he loved his blue heeler dog, Jake.  He was a member of the Alliance Eagle Aerie #136. He was a big fan of John Wayne and Lord Calvert Whiskey.

Randy is survived by his wife, Mary of Minatare, his daughter, DeEtte (Dan) Walters and grandsons, Cole and Elijah Walters of Hemingford and his Minature Schnauzer, Sammy. He is also survived by his siblings, Bernadene Halle of Cheyenne, WY, Connie (Rich) Stricker of Hemingford, Rick (Jean) Sample of Crawford, Rhonda (Dave) Swanson of Hemingford and Tammy (Gary) Griffee of Alliance his mother-in-law, Edith Geary of Crawford, and sisters-in-law, Billie Hamar of Crawford, Betty Calder of Lincoln and Danniece (Gordon) Stull of Morrill, NE along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, March 5 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hemingford Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to the FFA program at either Alliance or Hemingford High Schools, or to Regional West Hospice.

Mrs. Speirs passed away on February 28, 2019 at the Crestview Care Center in Chadron.

Lola was born in Winner, South Dakota on December 30, 1931.

She was 87

Robert “Bob” Webster of Hay Springs, Nebraska formerly of Crawford, Nebraska, passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at his home in Hay Springs, South Dakota.  Bob was born on September 25, 1934 in Crawford, Nebraska. He was 84. Graveside services will be held at a later date.

Pauline Marie (Willey) Stevens, 91

Pauline Marie (Willey) Stevens, 91, of Ashby, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, March 1, 2019 at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance.

Pauline was born in Alliance, Nebraska on November 15, 1927 to Oliver Leroy “Roy” Willey and Vina M. (Gilbaugh) Willey. She attended grade school at School District 9 south of Ashby. After attending Scottsbluff High School in Scottsbluff, Nebraska for 3 years, Pauline returned to Ashby where she graduated from Ashby High School in 1945.

In December 1950, Pauline married Ralph L. “Bill” Stevens, and they remained married for 65 years until his death in 2016. Together they welcomed two sons, Douglas Bruce and Larry Dean.

Pauline worked alongside her husband for Monahan Cattle Co. in 1951 until they moved to the Peterson Ranch north of Ashby in 1953. They purchased their home in Ashby in 1969. Pauline proudly supported her husband and sons, helping to operate the family ranch from 1969 until retirement.

Pauline was a member of the Ashby UCC, Hyannis Eagles Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and Eastern Star.

Pauline devoted her life to taking care of her family. She was a terrific cook and enjoyed time spent in her kitchen. In the summer, she could often be found in her garden, and she never missed an opportunity to spend time with her granddaughters. She had a love for embroidery and conversations over coffee. Pauline lived a full life as a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Survivors include her son, Doug (Nancy) Stevens of Hyannis; brother, Roy Willey of Halcyon, CA; granddaughters, Jacklyn (Eric) Rosenberg of Ralston, and Tarry Stevens and loyal companion, Moose, of Ashby; great-grandsons, Evan and Owen Rosenberg, of Ralston; sisters-in-law, Ruth Burgess, of Alliance, Joan (Loren) Sutton, of Bowling Green, MO, Norma Jean Stevens, of Rapid City, SD, and Mary Ann Stevens of Plattsmouth; and numerous nieces, nephews and great friends.

Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; son, Larry; parents, Roy and Vina Willey; parents-in-law, Ralph and Lottie Stevens; brothers-in-law Bernard Burgess, Jack Stevens, Wayne Stevens, Ike Failor, and Jack Patterson; sisters-in-law,  Liz Failor and Ana Stevens; goddaughter, Debbie Burgess.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, March 8 at 2 p.m. at Church of the Sandhills in Hyannis with Pastor Roy Monahan officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at the Hyannis Cemetery at a later date.  Memorials are suggested to Grant County Fire and Rescue.

Shirley (Jorgensen) Todd of Scottsbluff, Nebraska passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Alliance, Nebraska.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff with Rev. Craig Collins officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Shirley was born September 30, 1928 at Curtis, Nebraska to Carl and Fern Jorgensen, she was one of five children. As a young girl, she loved ice skating and was a member in the schools band and choir. She also worked along side her father in the family grocery store in Curtis. She graduated from high school in 1945.

Shirley married Dean Todd October 6, 1946 at Curtis. She loved him dearly and to that union was born three children, Terry, Michael and Laurie.

Shirley was an accomplished seamstress and homemaker. She enjoyed life, friends and family. She was a member of the Methodist church and choir, a very important part of her life, also the Quilting club and Valley Voices.

Survivors include her sister, Carolyn Peden of Gothenburg, NE, son Terry Todd (Susan) of Palm Desert, CA, daughter Laurie Hickox (Ken) of Alliance, NE, three grandsons, Douglas Hickox (Tiffany), Andrew Hickox (Michelle) and Craig Hickox (Randi Ensign) all of Alliance, NE. Also five great grandchildren, Dylan, Aiden, Edwin, Brecklen and Delilah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son, two brothers and a sister.

Twyla J. Metz, 95

Twyla J. (Batterman) Metz, 95, was born into this temporary world at Broadwater, on June 11, 1923, and resurrected from her Scottsbluff home to her eternal one on February 22, 2019. Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2, at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ in Bridgeport with her pastor, Jonathan Seng, officiating. Refreshments and visiting will be at the Angora Club House following Twyla’s burial at the Angora Cemetery. All are welcome. Memorials have been established to the Gideons and to the Bridgeport Church of Christ.

Twyla June was the baby of the Telko A. and Nellie Mae (Hawkinson) Batterman family. She became the bride of Guy H. Metz, Jr. of Angora on December 10, 1940. The couple farmed east of Angora and east of Alliance before purchasing the home place west of Angora in 1950. Moving to Scottsbluff in 1974, they traveled and eventually settled into their Metz Road oasis. Twyla loved gardening, fishing, and spending time with her Jesus and her family, especially her grandchildren, and since 2014 she spent many hours with her special caregiver, Bonny Richards.

Twyla is survived by her three sons, Guy (Sue) Metz of Seattle, WA, Don (Mary Lee) Metz of Angora and Dwight Metz of Minatare; grandkids, Jeff (Kim) Metz of Angora, Misti (Greg) Lacy of Scottsbluff, Tiffany (John) Gaertner of Cheyenne, WY, Zac (Katie) Metz of Chamberlain, SD, Wes Metz of Cheyenne, WY, Michelle Metz of Ellensburg, WA, Brittany (Jake) Marlow of Laramie, WY, Telly Metz of Seattle, WA and Phil (Melissa) Oberg of St. Paris, OH; 14 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Neal and Wayne; sister, Rowena Hutchinson; grandson, John Samuel Metz; and two granddaughters, Lisa Bressack and Jennifer Oberg.

Betty Jean Strom, 88

Mrs. Strom passed away on March 7, 2019 at the Northshore Health and Rehab in Loveland, Colorado.

Jean was born in Spencer, Nebraska on January 8, 1931.

Marjorie Kay Clark, 79

Marjorie Kay Clark passed away in Rapid City, South Dakota on March 8, 2019.  Marge was born on September 13, 1939 in a farm house north of Alliance, Nebraska to Myron and Mamie (McGinnis) Pugh.  Marge was the second youngest of 10 children.

She attended rule school North of Alliance until the third grade when the family moved to Poole, Nebraska.  The family eventually moved back to Alliance where she received her GED in 1956.

She met her husband Wayne at the Box Butte County Fair and they were married on December 5th, 1958.  The marriage brought two children.  Their son, Rick, was born on September 29, 1960 and daughter Lori on September 23, 1964.

Wayne worked as a farmhand for Ernie Koester east of Alliance until they rented land and begin farming on their own West of Alliance.  In 1968 they bought their farm north of Alliance where they lived until October of 2017 when they purchased a house in Alliance.  In 2018 when Wayne’s Alzheimer’s disease made it impossible for him to remain at home she moved on a part-time basis to Rapid City, South Dakota to be near him.

Together Wayne and Marge farmed and bought and sold cattle and horses.   After Wayne retired from farming in 2010 Marge continued to do the bookkeeping for the operation.

Marge enjoyed watching her husband, children and grandchildren compete in rodeos and team roping.  She spent countless hours “pushing cattle” and setting up barrels. She also timed and was the secretary at several team roping and rodeos over the years.

A die hard sports fan, Marge loved watching the University of Nebraska sports teams as well as the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies.  She also closely followed the Alliance and Hemingford high school sports programs.  She rarely missed her children and granddaughters perform in any sports or other activities.

She is preceded in death by her parents, six sisters and three brothers.

She is survived by her husband Wayne, son Rick (Mickie) Clark of Hemingford, daughter Lori (Marvin) Larabee of Rapid City, South Dakota, her granddaughters, Sara Clark (Justin Allison) of San Antonio, Texas and Corley (James )French of Alliance, Nebraska as well as her beloved great grandson Eryn Kozal of Alliance.

Funeral services will be Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel in Alliance with Reverend Gary Belk officiating.  Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour prior to service time Saturday.

Memorials may be given to the Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association.

Wanda P. Heule, 52

Wanda P. Heule, 52, was called home by her creator on Friday, March 8, 2019 in Hemingford.

She was born May 8, 1966 in Laramie, Wyoming to Gary and Patsy (Finley) Barnett. Her early life was filled with many struggles and hardships that turned her into the strong woman she became as an adult. She was skilled as a businesswoman, an artist, and a mother. During these last few months, she suffered at the hand of lung cancer, and now her suffering is over. She was loved by everyone she knew and will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her mother, Patsy Barnett, her uncle, Lonnie Finley, and his wife, Deb Finley, her sister Neaomi Finley, her former husband, Richard Heule Jr., her four children, Sara Dutra, Samantha Schwim, Richard Heule III, Robert Heule, and grandchildren, Arial Lawhorn, Marius Lawhorn, Makenna Honstein, Aaliyah Dutra, Scott Schwim, Henry Schwim, and Anna-Marie Schwim.

Memorial services will be held Friday, March 15, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel in Alliance followed by a reception at the American Legion in Hemingford from 4-8 p.m.

Lorraine J. Walgren 85

Lorraine J. Walgren, 85, of Alliance, died Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Highland Park Care Center.

Lorraine was born June 28, 1933 in McCook, Nebraska to Marian and Lena (Rhoad) Walker. She lived in Alliance most of her life and graduated from Alliance High School in 1951. She moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1980, but moved back to Alliance in 2004 when she retired. Most of her working life was spent as an office secretary at such places as the Guardian State Bank, General Adjustment Bureau/Seiler Claims, and Grandview School in Alliance and banking and real estate offices in Denver.

Lorraine is survived by her sons, Steve (Sue) Wickham of Kearney, Rick (Carol) Wickham of Alliance, daughter Debra of Denver, brother Dean Walker of Hastings, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and various nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Gayle Walker of Alliance, daughter Becky Wickham of Denver, son Paul Walgren of Alliance, grandson Justin Walgren of Biloxi, Mississippi, and longtime companion Larry Thompson of Denver.

Memorial services will be held Friday, March 22 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel.  Reverend Gary Belk of the First Baptist Church will officiate.  Private family burial of the cremains will follow the services.

Memorials are suggested to the Alliance Public Schools Foundation or Highland Park Care Center.

Walter Henry “Wally” Krantz, 54

Walter Henry “Wally” Krantz, 54, passed away on March 10, 2019 at the home of his mother in Scottsbluff surrounded by his family. He suffered from colon cancer in recent months. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel with Reverend Dr. Charles Richardson officiating. Wally was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska on July 28, 1964, the son of Robert and Jane Ann (Bauer) Krantz. He was raised on a farm near Bayard and had a special bond with his grandparents Jake and Esther Krantz and Joe and Lovina Bauer. He attended school in Bayard, graduating from Bayard High School with the Class of 1982. He excelled in FFA and 4-H as a youth.

Wally was raised in the Bayard Church of Christ where he was Baptized.

Wally especially enjoyed being in the cattle business with his dad. He had a cattle trucking business and later worked for Western Sugar during campaign. He most recently worked for Westco and had an ebay business.

Wally married Kay Brady and they later divorced. He met Cynthia Ruzicka and they were together many years and remained special friends.

Wally is survived by his mother Jane Ann Gabel; his father and step-mother Robert and Dorothy Krantz; brothers Maynard and Ken; companion Cynthia Ruzicka; step-daughter Sophina Sinks; step-son Brian Brady; sisters-in-law Lisa Krantz and Brenda Krantz; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many special friends.

Wally was preceded in death by his grandparents, step-father Tom Gabel, and sister-in-law Sally Krantz. Wally will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him. The family wishes to extend special thanks to RWMC 3rd Floor, Home Health and Mike Jackson who took compassionate care of Wally, Social Services Linda Broderick, Festival of Hope, Dr. LaConte, Dr. Wiebe, Dr. Sheppers, and Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel.


Robert Ivan Miskimen, 93

Robert Ivan Miskimen, 93, died at home in Bella Vista, Ark. on March 10, 2019.

He was born Oct. 25, 1925, to Elmo and Lean (Panwitz) Miskimen. He grew up near Alliance, Neb., and graduated Alliance High School in 1943. He attended the Concordia Theological Seminary graduating in 1952. He married Lois Magdalena Hoffmeyer in 1951. He served in the Lutheran Church Missouri synod for 42 years. He married Fae Bateman and traveled to many places. In retirement he published several family mementos and books.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 53 years, Lois Magdalene (Hoffmeyer); and brothers, infant Carl, Louis (Patty) Miskimen.

Survivors include his spouse, Fae Miskimen of Bella Vista; children, Victoria (Charles) Maaske of Horicon, Wisc., Carolyn (Dennis) Sayles of Oak Harbor, Wash., Elizabeth (Richard) Jackson of Oak Creek, Wisc., Grace Miskimen of Ridgecrest, Calif., Robert (Adonna) Miskimen of Avon, Ind., Christine (Weldon) Kunzemen of Juneau, Wisc., Eunice ( Rev. James) Harris of Apple Valley, Calif., Carl (Jaimie) Miskimen of Lodi, Wisc. and Karen Miskimen of Madison, Wisc.; brothers and sister, Ernest (Rosa) Miskimen of Minatare, Neb., Marie (Harry) Safford of Bayard, Neb., and Harvey (Grace) Miskimen of  Jefferson City, Mo.; and 20 grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m.  Monday, March 18, at Immanuel EV Lutheran Church in Alliance.  Interment will be in the Alliance Cemetery.

Evelyn Reed, 92

Funeral services for Evelyn Reed will be held Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Chadron with Dr Russ Seger officiating.  Burial will be at the Crawford City Cemetery.

Evelyn passed away Thursday, March 14, 2019, at the Ponderosa Villa in Crawford.  She was 92 years old.

Evelyn Marie (Fleishman) Reed was born at the Bootjer Hospital in Crawford on June 20, 1926, to Walter and Catherine Fleishman of Belmont.  She was raised, along with her sisters and brother, on the Fleishman farm southwest of Belmont.  She attended the Belmont School through 10th grade and graduated from Crawford High School in 1943.

After high school, Evelyn worked in Crawford at the Nash Finch Company and the phone company.  She worked at Fort Robinson during WWII.  She met Maurice Reed at a dance in Crawford, after he’d returned from the war.  They continued dancing together for 70 years.

Evelyn and Maurice were married January 27, 1947.   They lived in Crawford until 1953 when they moved to the farm north of Squaw Mound where they raised their children, Lloyd, Diane and Sue.   In 1984, they moved to the Reed Farm, originally owned by Maurice’s grandfather. In 2012, they moved to Chadron and lived at Prairie Pines Lodge until 2017.

Evelyn was a member of The Squaw Mound Homemakers Extension Club for more than 50 years.   Evelyn and Maurice enjoyed square dancing and belonged to the Grand Square square dancing club.  They also were members of the Chadron Centennial Saddle Club and the Crawford Eagles and Chadron American Legion.  They enjoyed traveling and went on numerous group bus trips throughout the United States, road trips, including a trip to Canada, and traveled to Europe for their 50th wedding anniversary.  Evelyn, her good friend Carmen Cook, daughter Diane and daughter-in-law Shirley traveled to Italy in 2003.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice, her sisters, Dora, Betty and Leola, and brother Eugene.  She is survived by her children, Lloyd (Shirley) of Loveland CO, Diane Durnin of Portland OR and Sue Daise of Chadron,  five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Lee Mabin Herbaugh, 88

Evelyn Lee Mabin Herbaugh was born December 2, 1936 to Cora Laura Beal and Gerald W. Mabin in Hemingford, NE.  On August 11, 1955 she married Billy J. Herbaugh in Gering, NE.  They had six children, Marcene J. Damitz (Jeff); Billy D. Herbaugh (Brenda); Edna R. Patterson (David); Becky L. Patterson; Elizabeth Ann Herbaugh (deceased); Andrew V. Herbaugh (Martha).  Evelyn is preceded in death by both of her parents, as well as by her brothers Leonard and Dale Mabin; her husband Bill and young daughter, Elizabeth Ann.

Bill and Evelyn were married in 1955 and lived for several years in Hemingford, NE; from there, they lived in several places in different states in the West, most notably, Gordon, NE, where Bill passed away in 2011.  In each place they lived, they strived to make it a home by nurturing a garden, raising livestock, attending church in the community, and even keeping a bee hive or two. Together, they helped provide food and sustenance to many in need, becoming treasured honorary “grandparents” to all who met them.  Evelyn was a devout member of the Baptist faith and had a deep conviction to always be a true friend to any that needed one.

Evelyn will be survived by fourteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.  The Herbaughs opened their home to multiple foster children in their youth and they volunteered with the Head-Start program in several capacities for several years late in their lives.  She enjoyed fishing with her family, making her own jams, jellies, butters, and canning all sorts of vegetables grown in her garden over the years.  In her later years she looked forward to playing bingo in each community she was living in at the time as she traveled to live with each one of her grown children after Bill passed away, with the last place being Utah, where she was hospitalized due to illness.  Evelyn Herbaugh passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2019 in Salt Lake City, Utah after suffering from a bout of pneumonia.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 22, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hemingford with Pastor Esther Achi officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church.  Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Sheila Myers Ray, 67

Sheila Myers Ray went peacefully at Vibra Hospital in Thornton, CO from complications after heart bypass surgery.

Sheila was born in Deadwood, SD September 3, 1951 to James Bowman Myers and Maxine (Chase) Myers joining her brothers, Tim and Ted Myers.

Sheila grew up and attended school in Deadwood and Highmore, SD and finished in Chadron, NE.  She lived in California and Germany before returning to Chadron where she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Sheila and Jim Ray were married October 2, 1993 at Roughlock Falls in South Dakota and they lived and worked on the family farm west of Hemingford, NE.  Sheila loved to garden and was an avid rock hunter.  Many of her birthdays were celebrated at the Crawford Labor Day Rock Show.  She loved her many cats, the skunk and raccoon that she and the cats mingled with freely.

Sheila is survived by her husband Jim, her brother, James (Linda) Myers; brother-in-law Tom (Melianda) Ray, sister-in-law Nancy Ray; nephews Paul Ray and his son, Ezra, Matt (Amy) Honstein and Mike (Mary) Honstein; and Aunt Dorothy Ray. Numerous nieces and nephews and cousins in the Myers family including Marta (Simon) Hardy, York, England; Quin Myers, Dean Myers and Carol Scott.  Sheila also left many very good friends in the Chadron area.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Ted Myers and step-father Gene Sutfin.

A celebration of life for Sheila and Ted Myers will be held in Chadron at the Olde Main Street Inn in July, 2019.

Sue Haberman of Hay Springs, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2019 At her home in Hay Springs, Nebraska. Sue was born on November 18, 1943 in Parkersburg, West Virginia. She was 75. No Services are being held. A memorial has been established for the Chadron Hospice. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron Nebraska, 69337.
