Betty Lee Ackerman, 88

Betty Lee Ackerman, 88, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2017 at her home in Alliance.

She was born April 24, 1929 in Alliance to Claude and Thelma (Sanders) Miller was named Elizabeth Lee.

She was united in marriage to Harold Ackerman on August 18, 1974. Betty was blessed with a great voice and loved to sing.  She enjoyed hobbies of collecting flowers and artificial butterflies and her main focus was showering her family with love. She was a member of the First Christian Church.

She is survived by her sons, Gary Lawrenz and Stephen Lawrenz both of Alliance and Dale Lawrenz of Scottsbluff and her 4 grandchildren, Melissa Lawrenz Cruz and Timothy Stoner of Omaha, Chris Lawrenz of Michigan and Leslie Franklin of Alliance, 22 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.  She is also survived by her brothers, Donald Miller of Branson, MO and Floyd Miller of Florida.

Her parents, husband, a brother and her son, Michael Lawrenz preceded her in death.

Memorial services will be Friday, July 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church with Pastor Kent Steinke officiating.  Inurnment will be in the Alliance Cemetery.

Funeral services for Donna Peters will be held on Friday, July 14, 2017 at 2:00 PM at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Hay Springs, Nebraska with Father Joseph Joseph and Father Tim Stoner officiating.  A Vigil will be held Thursday, July 13, 2017 at 7:00 PM at the Church.  Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Hay Springs.

Mrs. Peters, 89 passed away on July 9, 2017 at Chadron Community Hospital.  She was born January 6, 1928 in Rushville, Nebraska.

Beverly Gallegos, 83

Beverly Janine (Schwartz) Gallegos, 83 passed away on July 8, 2017 at Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City.

Beverly was born on February 17, 1934 in Wessington Springs, SD. The family moved to Hot Springs when Beverly was a child. There she attended school in what is now the Fall River Pioneer Museum. She married John Gallegos on October 15th, 1951 in Custer, SD. There they owned and ran the Custer Cafe until the birth of their first daughter, Pam. They then moved to Hot Springs, where they worked at the Evans Hotel. They had two more daughters, Jeri and Kathy. In 1960 the family moved to Oxnard, California for a brief time, where Beverly was a housewife and mother to the three girls. When they returned they lived in Rapid City, where she continued to care for her children and support her husband in various food service endeavors.

John and Bev settled in Buffalo Gap for the remainder of their lives. Beverly loved to spend time with her family and friends and took great joy in feeding everyone who came through the door. No one went away hungry. Her specialty was green chile, refried beans, and homemade tortillas. No one was a stranger to Bev and her kindness and giving nature was infinite. In her last years she was completely devoted to her constant companion and love of her life, her chihuahua, Coco. Her friends can be rest assured that Coco is now fat and happy in a loving new home with a dear friend.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Curt and Kelly Schwartz; her sister, Helen Miles; and her husband, John Gallegos.

She is survived by her daughters, Pam Logan, Jeri Baer, and Kathy Hilding; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, July 12 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Hot Springs.

Inurnment will be held at the Edgemont Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Home Care and Hospice of the Hills, 224 Elk St. Rapid City, SD 57701.

Dean Hinton, 88

Dean Hinton, 88, passed away Monday, July 10, 2017 at Box Butte General Hospital.

He was born Donald Dean Hinton on April 23, 1929 at Gordon, NE to Alton and Cecil (Dykes) Hinton.

On March 31, 1951 he was united in marriage to Phyllis Mallory.

Dean was a lifelong area rancher. His ranching career began with the Abbott Ranches near Hyannis and then continued with the Gudmundsen Ranch at Whitman and the Lost Creek Ranch at Alliance. He also held jobs with Mischnick Construction, Gaines Steel and Dr. Von Tour. He was a genuine and hardworking cowboy with the ability to fix and build anything. He will be remembered for always having a joke to tell and ready to sing you a song.

He is survived by his sons, Robert (Jorene) Hinton of Alliance and Brian (Kris) Hinton of Tulsa, OK, his grandchildren, Kyle of Thedford, NE, Kira of Kearney, NE and Katy Hinton Tulsa, OK. He is also survived by his sister, Juanita Petersen of Ogallala, NE and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and 4 brothers, Tex, Stub, Hopper and Bud and 3 sisters-Bonnie, Alta and Ella.

Memorial services will be Tuesday, July 18 at 1:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel with Pastor Gideon Achi officiating. Interment will be in the Bingham Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to donor’s choice.

Glen F. Cowan, 87

Glen F. Cowan, 87, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance.

Glen was born December 22nd 1929 in Pollock SD to Floyd H. and Clara (Luty) Cowan.  He was raised in Pollock and later married Marion Kuntz and moved to Washington State.  There they had two daughters Wanda and Donna.

After his divorce from Marion he moved to Bismarck ND, where he began his companionship with Patty Gensburger. Around 1992 they moved to Alliance NE.  Glen loved spending time with his dog Duke and enjoyed collecting pheasants and eagle memorabilia. He was known to be a stubborn old goat.

He is survived by his companion, Patty and dog, Duke; his children Wanda Kruckenberg and husband Clint of Hemingford NE; Donna McCarthy; his grandchildren, Tonia Kruckenberg, Selina Myers, Valerie Martin, Keith Martin, Jr. and Eric Martin.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents and sisters.

A celebration of life will be held at the Fraternal Order of Eagles located on West 3rd St in Alliance NE at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday July 20th 2017.  Lunch and refreshments will be provided by the Eagles Auxiliary.

Linda Stetson, 76

Linda Stetson, 76 passed away Tuesday, July 11 in Crawford, Nebraska.

Linda was born in Crawford, Nebraska, on September 19, 1940, to Carl and Lucille (Howard) Engebretsen.  She grew up on the family farm in Harrison/Sioux County with her parents and older siblings Nelson and Barbara (Hall).  She graduated from Sioux County High School and later received a teaching certificate and taught school for two years.  She also worked at Sioux County National Bank in Harrison for four years.  After she moved to Crawford she worked at Ruby’s Variety and the Ponderosa Villa, where she retired after 36 years as a CNA and Medication Aide.

On April 2, 1961, Linda and Rodney Stetson were married in Harrison in the Redeemer Lutheran Church where she had also been baptized and confirmed.  After Rod was honorably discharged from the Army, they settled down in Crawford where they raised their two sons, Neal and Tony.

Linda was a caring person with a keen sense of humor who always made time to visit, lend an ear and help whenever possible.  She and Rod always had a large garden and enjoyed canning and sharing what they grew.  She was involved in her community and belonged to several organizations, including the Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church for 56 years, where she was active in (LWML) ladies aid, she was a Cub Scout den mother and a member of the Ladies Jaycees.  Linda was a Big Red fan through and through – her favorite college football team was the Nebraska Cornhuskers and almost never missed a game.

Linda is survived by sons, Neal Stetson (David Pfannenstiel) of Denver and Tony (Robin) Stetson; grandson Trenton (Missy) Stetson of Coolidge, AZ; granddaughter Devon Stetson of Crawford; great grandson Rhett of Coolidge, AZ and great grandson Brandon of Crawford; brother Nelson (Roberta) Engebretsen of Washington, NC; sister Barbara Hall of Fargo, ND and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.  She will be greatly missed by everyone who had the chance to know her.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Rod, and her brother-in-law Dick Hall.

Funeral services for Linda Stetson will be Friday, July 21, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Crawford with Pastor James Rockhill officiating.  Refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 20, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Chamberlain Chapel in Crawford.  Inurnment will be held at a later date.

A memorial has been established for Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church.  Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE  69337.

Patricia Hogue de Ganahl, 88

Wife, mother, and very special homemaker, Patricia Hogue de Ganahl of Lakeside, Nebraska peacefully passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the age of 88.

Pat was born July 22, 1928 in Dickenson, North Dakota.  She was the daughter of Henry M. and Anna Beres Hogue.  As Pat grew up, her family lived in North Dakota, Oregon and Alaska.  She was a 1946 graduate of Juneau High School in Alaska.

While in Juneau, Pat met the love of her life, Charles de Ganahl.  They were united in marriage August 30, 1947.  To that union were born five children, Joe, Clay, Nancy, Christopher and Hank.

In 1954, Pat followed her husband Chuck into the cattle ranching business.  Over the next sixty years, their journey took her to the Lazy EH Ranch near Yampa, Colorado and later the Star and Dennis Camp Ranches near Lakeside, Nebraska.  Along the way, Pat made a happy home for Chuck and the family she loved.  Our Mom made sure the family, cowboys and hay crew always found plenty of hot food on the table, the house was clean, the chores were done and the kids were taught their manners.

She loved her visits and monthly Bridge parties with neighbor wives and friends. Watching and helping her grandchildren grow up became a special joy.  After 2004, Pat and Chuck spent their winters in Mesquite, Nevada.

Pat was preceded in death by Chuck, her husband of 63 years.  She is survived by her brother Duane Hogue, sisters-in-law Pat Hogue and Virginia de Ganahl Kimmel, her five children and their spouses, nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, six nephews, three nieces, extended family and many friends.

Mom will rest beside Dad amidst the special beauty of the Nebraska Sandhills with their favorite view of Dennis Camp.

The family will hold a memorial service in Nebraska at the Lakeside Methodist Church July 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.

Russell Alvin Hack, 82

Russell Alvin Hack was born May 24, 1935, at the Bootjer hospital in Crawford, Nebraska, the first born son of Alvin and Virginia (Trussel) Hack. He passed away on July 17, 2017 at home in Alliance at the age of 82 years.

He grew up on the family farm southeast of Crawford and attended school through the eighth grade at District 54, a nearby one-room country school. He spent his entire lifetime in Dawes and Box Butte counties of Nebraska, except for the three years in the military.

On September 30, 1954, he entered the US Army and was honorably discharged on September 18, 1957. Two and a half years of that time were spent in the Panama Canal Zone.

Russell married Wilma Soester on May 11, 1958, at Marsland, Nebraska. Three children were born to this union.

He worked for several area farmers before being hired as a grader operator for the Dawes County road department in April, 1975, a job he held until October, 2006.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma; one daughter, Ronda (Ken) Carter of Kingman, Arizona; two sons, Wade (Darlene) Hack of Farmington, New Mexico and Lyle (Jami) Hack of Tucson, Arizona; eight grandchildren, Justin (Amy) Shrewsbury, Rhett (Erin) Shrewsbury, LaTaya (Chris) Sanders,

Klete (Meagan) Shrewsbury, Brice (Misty) Shrewsbury, Cody Hack, Colton Hack, Shayna Hack,

two step-grandchildren, Senaya Powers and Kyla Powers; 16 great-grandchildren, Ashtyn, Shelby, Braelyn, Trell, Jaden, Jeter, Hadley, Kash, Jaxon, Aubree, Grace, Tripp, Charlee, Adaline and Whitley, one step great-grandchild, Taylor; one uncle Howard (Deloris) Trussel of Hemingford and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father on May 19, 1981; his mother on October 12, 1998 and

his brother Perry Hack Sr., on October 13, 1992

Funeral services will be held on, Saturday, July 22 at 10:00 am at the Community Building in Crawford, Nebraska with Stanley Morrison and Leslie Pountney officiating. Burial will be in the Marsland Cemetery.  Visitation will be at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Alliance Friday from 1-7 p.m. with the family being present from 5-7 p.m.

A memorial may be sent to the Crawford or Hemingford Volunteer Fire Department.

Sai Kosuge Ushio, 93

Sai Kosuge Ushio, 93, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2017, at Highland Park Care Center.

Sai was born on March 10, 1924 on a farm near Merino, Colorado, to Shichirobei and Some Kosuge. She was the eighth of ten children. Her dad raised sugar beets and even though the family squeezed into a small two bedroom house, Sai always had happy memories of life on the farm. In 1938, the family moved to a farm near Iliff where Sai graduated from high school in 1942. After working for a year as a maid in Greeley, Sai attended the University of Colorado at Boulder where she met her future husband, Sam Ushio. After Sai graduated from college, the couple married in Denver, Colorado, on June 17, 1949. They settled in Alliance, where they raised their four children, Ken, Julie, Chuck, and Tom.

Sai worked as a typist at St Joseph’s Hospital until their first child Ken was born. Later, she helped out Sam when he managed the Drake Hotel Coffee Shop and then Sam’s Café. She worked as a cashier at Safeway for several years and went back to get her teaching credential at Chadron State College. She taught for over twenty years in the Alliance rural schools at Districts 1, 2, 9, 40, and 44. After retiring from teaching in the rural schools, Sai opened up Small World Preschool and ran that for several years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron in 1984, and the International Friends Club. Her smiling face and gentle nature were constant over her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, friend and teacher. Sai enjoyed travelling with Sam to visit their grandchildren in Colorado, Wyoming, Minnesota and Hawaii. She also remained close to her seven sisters, visiting with them often.

Sai was preceded in death by her parents, husband Sam, seven sisters and five of their spouses, two brothers, Sam’s brother Joy Ushio and his wife Betty, Sam’s sister Irene Koseki, brother-in-law Nobo Ikuta, and grandchild Kenji Ushio Clark.

Sai is survived by her four children, Ken (Eva) Ushio of Minneapolis, Julie Ushio (John Clark) of Honolulu, Chuck (Teresa) Ushio of Alliance, Tom (Lori) Ushio of Sarasota Florida, 13 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Survivors also include sisters-in-law Rose Ikuta, June Kosuge, brothers-in-law John Masunaga, Dennis Kida, Bill Koseki, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held 3 p.m., Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at the United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church in Alliance; Veterans State Cemetery at Alliance Foundation, P.O. Box 902, Alliance; or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Delorise C. Steggs, 98, died Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Good Samaritan Health Care Center.

She was born February 16, 1919 in North Platte, Nebraska to Joseph and Elma Weber.

She married Cleo D. Steggs on December 21, 1938 in Alliance.  Delorise enjoyed gardening, flowers and raising cats.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Doyle and Marsha Steggs of Alliance; her granddaughter, Donna Buckner of Angora; great grandchildren, Casey Tyler of Oceanside, CA, Ryan Tyler of Angora, Hannah Calkins of Gordon and Cody Buckner of Angora; 2 great-great grandchildren; and her brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Lois Steggs of York.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter, her sister, and 2 brothers.

No services are planned at this time.

His funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Faith Lutheran Church in Gering with Reverend Richard Neugebauer officiating with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff. Visitation will be from 1-7 PM on Tuesday and 9 AM until 12 Noon Wednesday at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel. The casket will be closed at the funeral. Walter was born December 14, 1929 at Scottsbluff, Nebraska to William and Eva (Reichert) Schledewitz. He attended Sunflower School, graduating with the Class of 1948. Walter was united in marriage to Deloris Marlene Haverick on December 19, 1951 in Gering. To this union two daughters were born: Jan and Dianna.

The couple made their home in Scottsbluff, Bayard, and Hemingford before retiring to Alliance after many years of farming. Walter enjoyed riding his “Harley” when weather would permit and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Walter is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Jan and Gene Trackwell of Gering; daughter Dianna Rae Schledewitz of Maryville, MO; granddaughters Jennifer (Art) Valdez of Denver, CO, Stephanie (Andrew) Hrasky of Cheyenne, WY, and Linsey Trackwell of Gering; great-grandchildren Hannah, Kennedy, and Gunnar Hrasky and Caydon Aulick; brother Wilbert (Nadine) Schledewitz of Gering; sisters Darline Dietz and Doris Reifschneider both of Scottsbluff; sisters-in-law Delores Schledewitz of Scottsbluff and Shirley (Gary) Beck of Hawaii; several extended family members, many friends, and cherished biker buddies.

Bruce Eugene Chizek, 64

Memorial services for Bruce Eugene Chizek will be held Friday, July 28, 2017 at 10 am at the Chadron Berean Church with Pastor Frank VanCampen officiating.  A private family committal service will be held at 9 am at the Greenwood Cemetery.  Bruce passed away at home on Thursday, July 20, 2017.

The youngest son of Robert T. and Betty J. (Kruse) Chizek, Bruce was born on September 25, 1952 in Chadron, NE.  He attended Kenwood Elementary and graduated from Chadron High School in 1971.

He married the love of his life, Lois Jenine Jones, on July 27, 1997 in Chadron.  He was a loving and devoted husband.

He learned and mastered many skills while working for Chadron Wholesale, Chizek Radiator, bee keeping with his Dad, Charles McCance Ranches, Dawes County Weed District, East-side Eitemillers, City of Chadron, Wal Mart, and SWANN.

He enjoyed the outdoors as reflected in his passion for dirt bikes, fishing, hunting, and gardening.  He was a talented wood worker, creating many beautiful pieces that he loved to give as gifts.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; mother, Betty Chizek; brother, John (Vicki) Chizek; nephew Roger (Carrie) Chizek; uncles, Donald Chizek, Richard (Sandi) Chizek, Kenneth Chizek; aunts, Maxine (Bernard) Deans, Doloris Buckmaster; mother-in-law, Lorene Jones; sister-in-law, Sheryl Bruns; brothers-in-law, Leonard (Roma) Jones, Bernard (Carolyn) Jones, and Robert Poe; many cousins, nephews, nieces, and great nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert T. Chizek; nephew, Craig L. Chizek and sister-in-law, Teresa S. (Jones) Poe.

He will be remembered as a beloved husband and son, and as a quiet and gentle soul by all that knew him.

Funeral services for Maxine Hooker, 94 of Littleton, Colorado formerly of Chadron, Nebraska will be held Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chadron, Nebraska with Father Joseph Joseph officiating.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Chadron, Nebraska.

A vigil will be held on Friday, July 28, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Mrs. Hooker passed away July 21, 2017 at Willow Brook Place in Littleton, Colorado.

Maxine was born January 21, 1923 in Rushville, Nebraska.  She was 94.

Maxine Hooker, 94

Funeral  services will be held for Maxine Alberta Sandoz Hooker, age 94, at 10 a.m. on July 29, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Church in Chadron.  Maxine was born on January 21, 1923 in Rushville, NE to Constant and Mathilda (Peterson) Sandoz.  She passed away on July 21, 2017 at her residence in Littleton, CO.

Maxine grew up on the Constant Sandoz ranch in Sheridan County.  She was an active child who loved to ride horses and explore the beauty of nature.  After her brother Norman fell ill, she helped her father wrangle horses and work cattle.  Alongside her mother, she learned to sew and to prepare meals and delicious pies for the ranch hands, as well as help with chores and haying.

She met Joseph “Joe” Hooker in 1940.  After he joined the Army during World War 2, she moved to Chadron where she awaited his return, working at Jones Market, Gambles, and Schaffer’s Fashion Store.  They were married a month after he returned from the military.  She and Joe raised four children, Mark, Pat, Terry “Bim”, and Lisa.  She contributed to the family income by becoming an accomplished seamstress.  She sewed evening dresses, cheerleader uniforms, suits for men and women, and wedding gowns.

After the children grew up, Maxine became a teacher’s aide at East Ward Elementary.  She was also active in St. Patrick’s church as a Eucharistic Minister and RCIA sponsor, and attended Bible Study throughout her life. Maxine volunteered at the Dawes County Historical Society, Chadron RSVP, Birthright, as docent at CSC art shows, for various organizations that served meals to the poor and much more.  She was in Bridge Club, Christian Women’s Club, and Westerners.  In addition to these many activities, Maxine was a dear friend and neighbor.  She loved gardening and appreciating nature, reading, dancing and travelling.

When Joe retired from the railroad in the early 1980’s, Maxine joined him in helping the ranching families of Leonard Peters on the Mirage Flats.  They worked together to check cattle and fence lines until Joe had a stroke in 1998.

Maxine was beloved by her entire family.  She is described as a silly, fun loving grandmother, a generous and loving mother and mother-in-law, and an amazing Christian with a deep, abiding love for her Savior.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Norman and Donald, her husband Joe and her son Mark.  She is survived by daughter Pat and husband Lou Santoro, son Terry and wife Lois Hooker, daughter Lisa Hooker and husband Don Young, daughter-in-law Maureen Hooker, 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

A memorial has been established for the Dawes County Historical Society or the Chadron Volunteer Fire Department.  Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box, 970, Chadron, NE  69337.

Vincent E. Nepper, 74 of Alliance passed away Wednesday, July 26 at his home.  Funeral services will be held at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church on Monday July 31st at 10 a.m., with Father Tim Stoner officiating. Rosary/prayer services will be held on Sunday, July 30th at 7 p.m.. Viewing will be from 5-7 at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Holy Rosary Catholic church. Vincent was born July 24, 1943 in Alliance, Ne to Victor and Elsie(Freaderich) Nepper. He graduated from St. Agnes Catholic school in 1962. After graduating he worked for  panhandle warehouse, Bill Engel, 7up bottling Company and Jim’s mobile home service.

In 1965 he was united in marriage to Linda Stephens in Hot Springs, S.D., made their home in Alliance where they raised four children; Jayne, Bruce, Kenny, and Kevin. While raising his family he was employed by Hempels for 29 years, which later became Westco for 11 more years. After retiring he went back to work at the agronomy division of Westco.  Vince was a very hard working man, whose work ethic was second to none. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother and friend that will be greatly missed by all.

Vincent was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic church, the Knights of Columbus, an avid Minneapolis Moline tractor enthusiast and restoring his first car, a 1955 Ford which he drove last week.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Linda; children Jayne(Rich)Peterson of Arthur, Ne, Bruce(Tonya) of Torrington, WY, Kenny(Peggy) of Alliance, and Kevin(Melody) of Alliance. Grandchildren: Ashley(Jarrod) Koeteman, Morgan Peterson, Nathan Nepper, Nevin Nepper, Zoey Boyer, Jordan Peterson, Gryphon Nepper, Neil Nepper, Derrika Boyer, Nicole Nepper, Noah Nepper, and Ebayne Boyer. Great-grandchildren: Madison and Peyton; brothers, James of Terrytown, Ne and Gary of Alliance and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vincent was preceded in death by his parents, brother David, sister Alice, grandchild Atreyu, and great-grandchild Destiny.

 

Neal Holthus, 81

Neal Holthus, 81, of Gering, left this earthly life to be with our Lord, Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Mitchell Care Center surrounded by his loving family with songs, prayers, tears and heartfelt goodbyes. His family invites you to celebrate with them a life well lived at 10am on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Faith Lutheran Church in Gering with Reverend Richard Neugebauer, Pastor Ralph Morris and Pastor Daniel Holthus officiating. Interment with Military Funeral Honors provided by the US Army will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Visitation will be Monday at Jolliffe Funeral Home from 4-8pm. Neal was born May 27, 1936 in Latan, NE to George C. and Lena (Bartels) Holthus. He was one of nine children and graduated from Alliance High School in 1954. He served in the US Army and was a Korean War Veteran.

Neal married Jacqueline Fifield on August 1, 1959 and was blessed with 5 children. Neal farmed for much of his life, but also worked for the Farm Bureau, as a USDA Inspector, and owned Treasured Creations/Treasured Beginnings with his wife Jackie. He enjoyed creating stained glass art for churches and homes, gardening and was passionate about American Indian artifacts. Neal was a dedicated member and mentor for AA for over 50 years in the Scottsbluff/Gering area. He has been very involved in Gering Baseball where he coached his son George and touched the lives of many.

Neal is survived by his loving wife Jackie; children Marc Holthus of Gothenberg, NE, Tracy Holthus of Denver, CO, Krystal Holthus of Colorado Springs, CO, George Holthus (Cheri Hutchison) of Gering and GayLynn Holthus of Scottsbluff. His blessing continued with grandchildren Keisa (Garrett) Pyle Gardner and their children Kloee, Maddox and Lucee of Guam, LeiChelle (Logan) Hammer MacDonald of Alaska, Jordan (Hannah) Holthus and their children Dorian and Elliott of Ft. Collins, Alexandria (Cameron) Colerick Schenk and son Arlo of Virginia, Lauson (Samantha) Hammer of Lincoln, Chase Colerick of Denver, Seth Holthus (fiancee’ Delaney Gwin) of Gering and Doug Meyers of Gering; sisters Wiletta (Frank) Dye and Lorraine (Dick) Boness; sister-in-law Dorothy Holthus and numerous nieces and nephews.

His parents, siblings Wendell, LaVonne, Gene, Eldon, Paul, Ivan and numerous other loving family and friends preceded him in death.

William Lyle Lore, 83

William Lyle Lore, 83, passed away on July 23, 2017 at Sturgis Regional Hospital in Sturgis.

He was born on June 8, 1934 in Alliance to Howard and Sadie (Wilkins) Lore. William grew up and attended school in Alliance. After graduation he joined the US Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, Alliance, NE; sons, Terrell (Teresa) Lore, Alliance, NE and Tom (Tammy) Lore, Alliance, NE; daughters, Selina (Gregory) Boness, Sturgis, SD, Mary Ellen (John) Reeves, Crete, NE; Bette Jo (Jason) Odell, Alliance, NE; 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

William was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Sadie Lore; wife, Beverly Lore; son, John Henry Lore; brother, Howard “Sonny” Lore; sisters, Madene Dougherty and Naomi Lore.

Cremation has taken place and services will be held at a later date in Alliance, Nebraska.

Alice J. Manion, 68

Alice J. Manion, passed away at her home on Sunday, July 30, 2017 at the age of 68.

Alice was born March 5, 1949 to Alfred and Eunice (Buhrmann) Bogle in Globe, AZ.  Alice moved with her family to Crete, Nebraska as a child where she attended school and graduated from Crete High School in 1967.  She attended Texas Christian Women’s University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before meeting her husband Bill.  The two were married September 5, 1970 in Lincoln.  They had two daughters.  After moving to Alliance, Alice worked for the City of Alliance before returning to school at Chadron State College to complete a degree in education.  Alice taught at St. Agnes Academy and the Alliance Public Schools.  She was employed as the office manager at Diamond Hill Farms at the time of her passing.

Through the years, Alice has spent countless hours helping the youth of the community.  She was actively involved with American Red Cross swimming lessons and was a fixture at Alliance High School girl’s basketball games.  In more recent years, Alice was most joyous when spending time with or sharing stories of her two granddaughters.  She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and a big supporter of animal rescue.

Alice is survived by her daughter Heidi Manion of Alliance and daughter and son-in-law Heather and Nate Waite of Lincoln and her beloved granddaughters Mila and Harper Waite as well as her dog Lucy.  She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Charles and Jane Bogle of Derry, NH as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband William “Bill” Manion and her parents.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, August 7 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.  Father Bernard Berger will officiate.  Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery.  Wake services will be held Sunday, August 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the church.  Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
