Matha Christina (Hansen) Hollinrake, 85, of Hemingford, Nebraska, died Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

Matha was born May 10, 1931 in Hemingford to Martin Christian and Mary Barbara (Walters) Hansen. She was the youngest of four children. Matha married James “Jim” Hollinrake on July 14, 1952 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Hemingford.  The couple has two sons, Steven and Gary.

Matha’s passion was the Village of Hemingford, and she had a lifelong career in finance, real estate, and church and community service. Always on the move to better herself, Matha’s “last retirement” was from the role of real estate agent at age 80. Matha attended school in Hemingford graduating high school in 1948. Immediately after graduation she took a job at the Bank of Hemingford. Her responsibilities there grew to include managing the bank’s insurance agency and involvement in loans. Her advancements eventually placed her in charge of bank operations and supervising five employees. Matha retired from the bank after 35 years of service. Her subsequent career endeavors included time as a bank examiner for the state of Nebraska, branch manager for Nile Valley Federal Savings & Loan, and real estate agent with Buchfinck, Inc.

Matha’s volunteer service included serving as Cub Scout Den Mother and secretary-treasurer for the Cub Scout Pack; many years typing bulletins and keeping books for St. Bridget’s church; member of Hemingford Ministerial Association; member, treasurer, and president of the Hemingford American Legion Auxiliary; secretary-treasurer and board member for Hemingford Christmas Diorama; secretary-treasurer of the Village of Hemingford Planning and Zoning Committee; president and multi-year member of the Hemingford Chamber of Commerce; vice-chair of the Hemingford Centennial Committee; volunteer office worker for Social Services; election to the Hemingford Village Board; and serving as mayor of Hemingford.

Matha spent many years assisting elderly in Hemingford with their insurance and medical-related paperwork.

Matha was a life-long learner obtaining licenses and certifications in banking, insurance, securities, and real estate. Her long time goal of obtaining a college degree was achieved when, in her 60’s, she received an Associate’s Degree in Business from Nebraska Western College and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management from Chadron State College.

Despite repeated family suggestions for relocation, she made it clear to us that Hemingford always was, and always would be her home. Our family has special thanks for her many friends, neighbors, and community members who gave her the assistance she needed to stay in her home.

Matha is survived by her sons, Steve (Jeannette) Hollinrake of Columbus, NE and Gary (Peggy) Hollinrake of Hemingford; her sister, Helga Tschacher of Scottsbluff; 4 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, 5 step grandchildren, 7 step great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and her Sunday afternoon card group.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, parents Martin and Mary Hansen, sister Ann Johnson, infant brother Carl Hansen, and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.

Funeral services for Lloyd E. Earl of Chadron, Nebraska will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in Chadron with Pastor Aaron Sprock officiating.  Burial will be at Beaver Valley Cemetery in Hay Springs, Nebraska.

Lloyd passed away on January 18, 2017 at Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs.

Lloyd was born on October 29, 1924 in Sheridan County, Nebraska.

He was 92.

In the early 1900’s, Rex and Rintha Mae Earl purchased a small farm near Beaver Wall, built a house and a few out buildings and started their family.  Ruth was their first born, and then came three boys, Vernon, Lloyd and Willis.  Lloyd was born October, 29, 1924.

The entire family worked very hard in order to make a living.  Lloyd started working out for neighbors at a very young age.  When he was 12, he spent an entire summer herding sheep, being paid $.40 a day, and going home every other weekend.  During those long and lonely days with the sheep Lloyd taught himself to play the harmonica.

Lloyd attended Beaver Valley School #60 and worked summers for various farmers.  In 1944, Lloyd joined the Army and was sent overseas, being in combat in the European Theater.  He experiences the horrors of war during the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded in January of 1945.  At least three times Lloyd remembers when he should have been killed during the fierce fighting.  All this, experienced by a young Nebraska farm boy.  Following the war, he was a part of the Army of Occupation in Austria for a year and was honorably discharged in 1946.

After arriving home, Lloyd married and had two children, Danny and Bonnie.  The little family worked at various places in the area and Lloyd was working for his father-in-law during the “49 blizzard.  The Earl’s were in Rushville playing cards on New Year’s Day, a Sunday, when a friend came in and told the group it was starting to blizzard.  Lloyd and his family were stranded until Thursday when Lloyd was able to find someone to fly him home to check on his livestock which he feared would be gone.  After checking his place over, he discovered his only loss was an old rooster!  His hogs and cattle were all clustered into the sheds and barnyards unharmed.  Although his milk cows did dry up from not being milked for those 5 days!

After many experiences of working for farmers and ranchers and farming for himself, Lloyd realized he really didn’t like farming.  Their son, Danny was mentally handicapped and required special schooling so the family moved to South Dakota to be closer to Danny’s school.  Lloyd began selling dairy products and especially enjoyed delivering to individual homes, making many friends.  He then worked for a rental company called Dustex.  In 1969, Lloyd married Lois and in 1975 they moved to Chadron to care for his father.  For 30 years, Lloyd had his own Lawn mower sales and repair business, which he loved.  In March of 2006, Lois moved into Pioneer Manor where Lloyd made new friends with the staff and residents as he visited.  Lloyd faithfully visited Lois each week until Lois’s passing in October of 2013.

About a year ago, Lloyd had some health concerns and realized he didn’t was to live alone anymore, so decided he would come live here with his Pioneer Manor friends.  But he was unsure of what to do with his little dog Daisy; it wasn’t long before he learned that Bryan and Bew young would love to take Daisy.  So now Lloyd has the best of both worlds, living with us and being able to see Daisy as Bryan brings her to visit most every evening.

Lloyd enjoyed the activities, visiting, and meeting new people, residents, and staff.  He also still had his van so he could join his Church family each Sunday.

Lloyd is survived by his nephew David Earl; Nieces, Lili Einsphar and Carol Earl; great  nephews Kurtis, Bob, Dan, Tim, Willis, Scott and Matt; great nieces Kim, Krystal, and Karla.

Dorothy M. (Manion) Kunzman died quietly in her sleep at Box Butte General Hospital Monday morning, January 23, 2017. She was born, the ninth of 10 children, to William Coleman and Martha (Mae Peters) Manion on November 27, 1933 in rural Box Butte County, in her parent’s sod home.

She attended rural schools in Box Butte County and graduated from St. Agnes Academy in 1950. She also received a teaching certificate from Kearney State Teacher’s College and taught rural schools for a short time. She was an accomplished crossword puzzle afficiando. She always completed the newspapers’ crossword puzzle in ink.

Dorothy was perhaps best known around town and in her family for her role as a “grammar nazi.” She was adept at finding spelling, grammar and punctuation errors in the newspapers, the books she devoured daily and even her children’s speech. Fortunately, she found her calling as an editor for many years at the Alliance Times-Herald in Alliance, Nebr., where she was paid to do what she did best – lovingly perfecting the written word for the enjoyment and edification of others.

Dorothy served faithfully at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance, as a eucharistic minister, religious education instructor, altar society and prayer chain leader. She was also a dedicated volunteer at Alliance’s St. Agnes Academy, serving in nearly every role offered there from room mother to first woman president of the St. Agnes school board. She was also a Franciscan Associate, sharing service, prayer and special bonds with the local Sisters of Saint Frances.

However, Dorothy’s greatest accomplishment in life was her family. She married Leonard A. Kunzman on June 23, 1952 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Hemingford, Nebr. Their eight children include Julie Kunzman and Maureen (J.J.) Smith of Alliance, Mary (Ed) Wernke and Tricia (Martin) Schumacher of Hemingford, Dan (Pam) Kunzman of Beatrice, Nebr., Joe (Bobbie) Kunzman of Sioux Falls, So. Dak., Jean and Joan Kunzman of Lincoln, Nebr.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leonard, sisters Sr. M. Coronata Manion, Wilma Eickhoff, Eleanor Manion and Donna Goldstedt and brothers, Joe, Tom, Laurence and William Coleman (Willy) Manion. One brother, Maurice Manion of Cushing, Okla. survives.

In addition to her children, Dorothy is mourned by 11 grandchildren: Katelyn Kunzman of London, England and Hannah Kunzman of Omaha, Nebr.; Megan (Hashim Mooppan) Wernke of Arlington, Va., Melinda and Marlee Wernke of Aurora, Colo.; Justin Schumacher, currently stationed at a U.S. Embassy in Africa, Jeff (Tasha) Schumacher of Hemingford, Joelle (Sean) Wacker of Shelby, Nebr. and Jaimee (Titus) Cline of Frederick, Md., Jarad Kunzman of Sioux Falls, So. Dak. and Jory Kunzman of Madison, So. Dak.; and 13 great-grandchildren: Rachel, Rebecca, Jacob, Elliot and Theodore Wacker; Brenna, Raegan and Wyatt Schumacher; Adele and Elva Cline; Braelyn Norman, Laila and Amir Mooppan; numerous neices, nephews, cousins and close friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance, Nebr., Friday, January 27, with a wake service Thursday at the church at 7p.m.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home and continue at the wake service.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, are requested to the St. Agnes Academy Foundation, 1104 Cheyenne, Alliance, NE 69301, or the Sisters of St. Francis, 1104 Toluca Avenue, Alliance, NE 69301.
