Donald W. Hansen, 85, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2016 at his home in Alliance.

Don and his twin brother, Dale, were born October 18, 1931 at Alliance to Hans and Sena Hansen.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from November 20, 1951 and was honorably discharged on October 31, 1953.

Don was united in marriage to Shirley Bowser on May 25, 1951 in Hemingford.  To this union 6 children were born. Shirley passed away in 1980.  On January 9, 1982 Don married Karen (Brock) Kumpf in Hemingford and Karen’s three children were added to his family.

Don was well-known and recognized for his farming activity and community contributions.  He served on many cooperative boards as a Director.  He served for many years as a State Board Director for the Nebraska Farmers Union.  In 2001 he was honored as a lay person for the Nebraska Conference of the United Church of Christ.  He considered a highlight to be elected to serve as a County Commissioner of Box Butte County for 12 years.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; his children, Vicki (Randy) Schwerdt of Louden, TN, Cheri Prochazka of Aurora, CO, Greg (Margaret) Hansen of Hemingford, Kim (Dave) Engel of Scottsbluff, Perry (Kammi) Hansen of Garden City, KS and Brad Hansen (Michelle Felker) of Hemingford, his step-children, Tim (Deb) Kumpf and Craig (Heather) Kumpf of Hemingford and Kaylene (Ron) Sorensen of Lincoln.  He is also survived by his grandchildren, Haylee (Brad) Teibel, Jason (Joselyn) Schwerdt, Melissa (Mike) Duncan, Matthew  (Holly) Prochazka, Brian Thramer, John (Emily) Sample, Shaun (Jessica) Hansen, Austin (Shy) Engel, Ryan (Kelsey) Engel, Chase (Liz) Engel, Hans, Blake and Emily Hansen, Kyle (Jessica) Schwarting, Kristin (Todd) Reischl, Kayla (Charles) House and Kimberly (Adam) Paulsen,  23 great grandchildren and his step-grandchildren, Kennedy, Kylie, Mikayla Kumpf, Kaitlyn and Kyle Kumpf and Josh and Jake Brandt.

Memorial services will be Monday, November 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Box Butte County Fairground Multi-purpose Hall with Pastor Jim West officiating.  A private family inurnment will be held at the Hemingford Cemetery.

 

The family would prefer memorials in lieu of flowers be sent to Regional West Hospice or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
