Floyd E. Colwell, 86, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2018 at Heritage Estates
in Gering, NE.
He was born on December 16, 1931 at White Clay, NE to Everett and Margaret
(Kearns) Colwell.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956.
On June 1, 1952 he was united in marriage to Mildred E. Eddy at the
Presbyterian Church in Rushville, NE.
He received his B.S. in Education in 1962 and his Master’s in Education in 1965
from Chadron State College. Floyd’s career was dedicated to elementary education.
He started teaching in rural Sheridan County schools for 5 years before teaching
in the Rushville Public Schools for 3 years.
In 1962 he moved his family to Alliance and began in the Alliance Public
Schools. He was the Principal at Grandview Elementary School as well as
splitting the same duties at Emerson Elementary School for a number of years.
He served in that capacity until retiring in 1994 after 32 years. He also served
as the Migrant School Program Director for 28 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred, his children, Mary Lou Colwell (Romas
Aleliunas) of Bellevue, WA, Daryl (Patty) Colwell of Alliance, Kent (Lisa)
Colwell of Hays, KS, Robert (Lola) Colwell of Fort Collins, CO, Greg (Amy)
Colwell of Parker, CO and Jeff (Debbie) Colwell of Thornton, CO, 13
grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sister, Doris (Clayton) Tallon of Hay Springs, NE,
Charlie Colwell and Roy (Nancy) Colwell of Rushville and Jerry Colwell of
Omaha, NE, and his brother-in-law, Marvin Crist of Cheyenne, WY.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, James, his brothers, Mark and
Jimmy, and his sisters, Helen Crist and Kay Ehrmann
Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 8 at 10:00 a.m. at the First
Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home Tuesday from 1-7 p.m. with
the family being present from 5-7 p.m.
A memorial for a scholarship program in Elementary Education will be
established through the CSC Foundation, 1000 Main Street, Chadron, NE
